SENATOR ALESI ANNOUNCES OVER ½ MILLION FOR IRONDEQUOIT POLICE

Senator Alesi’s announcement in advance of National Night Out

Senator Jim Alesi (R- Perinton) was joined today by Irondequoit Town Councilman John Perticone, Irondequoit Police Chief Richard Boyan, Lt. Michael DiGiovanni and members of the Irondequoit Police Department to announce the final $250,000 installment of a three-year, $700,000 commitment to the Town of Irondequoit.  The funding secured by Senator Alesi has enabled the Irondequoit Police Department to complete a massive overhaul of their operation, including new police cars, handguns, and firing range.

“Our local police officers and first responders have one of the toughest jobs - often responding to unknown and dangerous situations, putting their lives on the line to save ours.  There is nothing more gratifying than securing these funds to ensure their lives are protected so they can continue to protect others,” said Senator Alesi.

“Last week, I spent another night riding with one of our Irondequoit Police officers and I know firsthand the importance of providing the men and women who are on the front line keeping our community safe with the proper equipment,” said Irondequoit Supervisor Mary Ellen Heyman. “Senator Alesi understands this need and on behalf of the Town of Irondequoit, our Police Department and our residents, I am grateful for the Senator’s support.”

"Our officers appreciate all of the support they receive to help them do their job safely and more efficiently. Senator Alesi is someone we can count on. I am personally grateful for his support of our mission and our department," said Irondequoit Police Chief Richard Boyan.

The majority of the $700,000 secured by Senator Alesi was used to purchase new police patrol cars, one new police SUV technician truck, two new animal control units, a new police digital video recording camera, as well as, the replacement of handguns, gun holsters, and magazine clips.  An extensive renovation of the firing range will also be made possible with this funding.

The grant secured by Senator Alesi has also allowed the town to update other department fleet vehicles.  The Parks Department received three new utility vehicles, two pickup trucks, and a new tractor with snow blower.  The Department of Public Works received two new pickup trucks and one new dump truck.

In addition to this recent procurement of funding, Senator Alesi has secured nearly $100,000 since his tenure in the Senate for the Irondequoit D.A.R.E  program, as well as a number of other community outreach programs.

As a member of the Senate Crime Victims, Crime, and Correction Committee, Senator Alesi is known for his efforts in protecting the safety of New York's children and families. In 2006, after the death of a New York State Trooper who was chasing a fleeing vehicle, Senator Alesi’s bill that creates three new crimes of unlawful fleeing of a police officer in a motor vehicle was signed into law.

This past legislative session three of Senator Alesi’s bills to regulate the residency of sex offenders (S.172B, S.266, S.274) all passed the Senate, as well as his bill (S.268A) which requires crime victims, upon request, to be notified of parole hearing of perpetrator of crimes.
